Trump has rebranded the Gulf of Mexico as the 'Gulf of America'.

The declaration was made as Air Force One flew above the waters now officially referred to as the Gulf of America, en route to New Orleans for Super Bowl 59.

In a significant development, President Donald Trump issued a proclamation on Sunday designating February 9 as the inaugural "Gulf of America Day," which signifies the renaming of the Gulf of Mexico to its new title, the Gulf of America.

The announcement was made as Air Force One flew over the waters now officially referred to as the Gulf of America, en route to New Orleans for Super Bowl 59.

This renaming is a result of Trump’s Executive Order 14172, which was signed on January 20, 2025, and mandated the rebranding of the U.S. Continental Shelf area. This significant change impacts the region bordered by Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, and Florida, extending to the maritime boundaries with Mexico and Cuba.

In a statement issued by the White House, Trump articulated his rationale: "I took this action in part because, as stated in that Order, '[t]he area formerly known as the Gulf of Mexico has long been an integral asset to our once burgeoning Nation and has remained an indelible part of America.'"

"Today, I am deeply honored to designate February 9, 2025, as the inaugural Gulf of America Day," the White House announced.

"On January 20, 2025, I signed Executive Order 14172 ('Restoring Names That Honor American Greatness'). Among other directives, that Executive Order mandated the Secretary of the Interior, acting under 43 U.S.C. 364 through 364f, to 'take all appropriate actions to rename as the 'Gulf of America' the U.S. Continental Shelf area bounded on the northeast, north, and northwest by the States of Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, and Florida, extending to the seaward boundary with Mexico and Cuba in the area formerly known as the Gulf of Mexico,'" the statement continued.

This visit marks Trump’s first to the newly named Gulf of America, a designation now firmly established in U.S. history. The White House has urged officials and citizens across the nation to commemorate the day with programs, ceremonies, and activities to honor this significant event.

“As my Administration restores American pride in the history of American greatness, it is fitting and appropriate for our great Nation to unite and celebrate this momentous occasion and the renaming of the Gulf of America,” the statement concluded.

The renaming initiative is part of a broader effort to reclaim names that reflect American pride, with the Trump administration committed to reinstating names that honor the nation's greatness. Google Maps will soon display the revised name "Gulf of America," pending finalization by the U.S. Geographic Names System. In Mexico, however, the body of water will continue to be referred to as the "Gulf of Mexico," while both designations will be presented internationally.

In a jubilant post on X, Trump released a video of himself signing the proclamation, expressing his characteristic enthusiasm by stating, “Make America great again, right. That’s what we care about.” Accompanying the video, the White House unveiled an updated map featuring the Gulf of America, symbolizing a significant transformation in America's geographic and cultural identity.
